Cardstore.Com Is My New Go To Printer For Personalized Cards, Invites, and More

Mother's Day is approaching and this is really a beautiful, personalized way to say I love you to Mom, Grandma and any woman in your life that has made an impact.

I love when you can personalize cards but more importantly, as an amateur, professional photographer, I love being able to share my pictures with friends and family.

As you all know, Goddess just celebrated her 5th birthday and while I loved doing craft thank you's for the kids in our lives, I really wanted to do something special for all the adults who showed their love to Goddess.

Picture 948

I chose the style (3 pictures, because how could I pick only one????), I placed my order for the amount I needed (No minumum order! Get whatever you need. Need 1 card? No problem)! When I saw the box 2 days after placing my order I was shocked. The turn around was so fast. The card itself is amazing! Nice, thick cardstock, that holds its shape and stands up almost like a frame. No bending in the middle. I love getting cards and placing them around the house (on shelves or the top of the TV) but they end up bending in the center within 2 days, eventually laying flat on the table until I decide if they are keepers.

Color Carnival Friday

This week's Color Carnival is a hard pick for me. I have so many fun pictures that I took with this theme in mind.

Playing Catch-Up After Playing Hooky With The Kids

I am not a big believer in standardized education. Kids do not need to be in a structured, school setting to learn in my eyes. This means many things (which we will undoubtedly get into along the way), but it also means is that I have absolutely no problem springing the kids from school, for what has become our yearly ritual of going to the zoo.

My Little Ground Hogs (more pictures to come)

April 29, 2010 (61)

Yesterday, Goddess just told me "you can give away all our Little People."
Me: Huh, you don't want them anymore?"
Her: No Handsome and I don't play with them, you can give them to someone else."

*Sob* this makes me so sad. I loved watching them play with their Little People. We have hundreds and they were a big part of their pretend play. So sad!!!!
Built in Play date

I loved watching them create these villages with the Strawberry Shortcake house and the Little People. My kids are getting big! Wahhhh.

This picture from 2007 actually hurts my heart!

Mr. Magoo Returns on DVD After a 30 Year Vacation with Kung Fu Magoo

As a child of the 60's I was a big Magoo fan. Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carole was by far my favorite holiday movie for many years.  When I was approached to review a new Magoo movie with Disney stars Dylan and Cole Sprouse I was excited. Would Magoo be relevant? Would kids of today watch it?

What I Can Tell You: I put the DVD in and explained to Goddess that we were going to watch a movie called "Kung Fu Magoo". She thought the title was funny. So do I! I told her that when I was little I loved Mr. Magoo. She loves hearing my "when I was a little girl stories."

We sat down on the couch with a blanket and pressed play. She loved it. Magoo is still cute and funny in a sad sort of way. Magoo and his "nephew" fight against evil and Magoo avoid danger by the skin of his teeth.

I was surprised and happy that Goddess liked it. She is not familiar with Dylan and Cole although I believe this will be a reason a lot of tweens might like it.

Husband And Wife by Leah Stewart

What I Can Tell You: I read this book from cover to cover in 2 nights and loved every minute of it. It is so well written. The characters, storyline and general feel of the book are perfect!  I will love the main character Sarah. Sarah's world is rocked to the core and she STILL has to do her mother duties. Totally believable story that shows just how strong woman can be and how strong they HAVE to be.

I will be searching for more books by Leah Stewart, she is a fantastic writer who keeps the story moving and doesn't beef it up with filler (I never felt like I had to read ahead to pass over irrelevent storyline). If you are like me, you will not be able to put this book down.

Husband and Wife hits the shelves on May 4th.

Melba Snacks Food From My Past Get A Make Over

When Mom Central asked for bloggers interested in reviewing Melba Toast I raised my virtual hand. I remember Melba Toast from when I was a kid. Whenever my parents went on a diet, and it happened often, they would eat Melba Toast.

I received two boxes in the mail, a Sea Salt flavor and Spicy 3 Pepper to try. I took them with me to my morning, coffee meeting and asked my girlfriends to try them. They both liked them however, I was more fond of the Sea Salt one. The big test was my 5 year old. She asked to try one and took the tiniest nibble. While I waited for a face she swallowed the nibble and went back for more giving me the proverbial that has become her signature "I like it" stance.

When my parents ate them, they usually threw some tuna or egg salad on theirs. This was over 35 years ago though, things are a little different thanks to Chef Kyle Shadix. Check out some of these awesome recipes, including a dessert made with Melba Toast.

The End Of the Line - Where Have All The Fish Gone

What I Can Tell You:
My husband and I are big documentary watchers so I was excited to watch one that I had not seen yet. The END of the Line, Where Have All The Fish Gone is narrated by Ted Dansen and shows us the devastating effects "over fishing" has on our oceans. I had no idea of the declining fish population around the world. One speaker talks of how they dredge the ocean over 6 times a year and compared it to a farmer. If a farmer plowed over 6 times a year, how much crop would he actually get?

This is an eye opening movie. I was completely unaware of the how consumer consumption and corporations have aided in the decline of many fish populations and how these declines affect the health of the ocean itself. Could we possibly have an ocean without fish by 2048? Scary thought!

Because of cost I do not eat a lot of fish. However, before you take a bite, see if the fish  planning to buy or eat is caught or farmed in a way that is sustainable.

The End of the Line is not suggesting you give up eating fish, they merely want to educate the public to the crises we are inevitably heading toward.

AAARRRHHHHHHGGGGG!!!

Why?

I understand and give everyone the benefit of the doubt, yet sometimes I just don't get it.

On April 7th I posted an item on Ebay stating "pick up only" since it is a huge, heavy piece of furniture.

On the 10th and 13th I received bids on the item. Hooray for me.

On the 14th, bidder #1 asked to be removed from the bidding because they didn't realize this was a pick up only item.

I was unable to remove and asked if they could remove themselves. They couldn't or didn't.

The item ended and since I knew #1 wouldn't be coming to get it. I sent messages to bidder #2 saying;

"The person who bid after you didn't realize the item was pick up only. If you want the item before I relist, please let me know." (I wrote it this way because I wanted to hopefully make the sale but also because I wanted to let them know IT IS PICK UP ONLY!)

No response but I received a payment of $180.00. Awesome. So they MUST understand that it is pick up only so I send a response. When will you be picking up? Nothing! I look them up and see that they live in CALIFORNIA. Ummm..I live in NY.

I head over to PayPal sending back the money that I COULD SO USE stating, "This item is pick up only. If you intend to pick up, please resend the money."

Today, I receive this message!
Hi I havent your item, it has been one week and nothing please e-mail me ??????????

ARRGHHHHHGGG...really, seriously!????? WTF!

So, now I have AGAIN sent a message through EBAY because that is the only info I have on them, lets see what happens.

My First I Heart Faces Challenge

I have been following I Heart Faces for some time now but never felt up to the challenges. This week the challenge is "Smiles".

This is one of my favorite Goddess portraits.  She is the actress and my perfect muse.

Avatar Lives Up To The Hype

There has been so much talk about Avatar over the past few months and on my blog, yet, I saw it for the first time last night thanks to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Well, if you have seen the movie, I probably won't say anything that you don't already know, but please go ahead and leave your comment telling me what you loved about Avatar.

After we put the kids to bed we sat down with our review copy and got ready for a long night (the movie is almost 3 hours long). You don't even realize how long the movie is because it moves so quickly and there is no down time.

From the moment it starts you are transported to Pandora. The visual effects of Avatar are amazing. The brilliant color, the imagery, the soundtrack all make for an award winning movie.

What I Can Tell You: The movie is amazing. If you haven't seen it. See it! If you have, well, you know, watch it again. I will.  I appreciated the whole save a tree, save a civilization story. WOW, the visuals amazing!!! Stunning clarity. Pure genius. There story moves quickly but you never feel lost. I loved everything about it including the really cool "Halo" guns and crazy robotic suits. I cannot wait to sit with my kids to watch this when they are old enough.

Parents, while I personally think it is a beautiful piece of work, I cannot show my kids yet. There are three curses in the movie (bitch was one of them).

Avatar is worth the hype. You will not be disappointed.

Self Portrait Sunday - April 25, 2010

Here are the reasons for playing: Come on, admit it, you look through your photo albums or computer folders and see very few photos of yourself. Maybe it is because, like me, you are usually behind the camera. Or maybe, it's because you never feel you look good in photos so you tell everyone, "don't take any of me."

Well, take it...in the future you will wonder why you thought you didn't look good! You look good, be proud and show your smiling face!

Here is my face in reflection. I was at the Botanical Gardens this week and Lauri thought this would be a great Self Portrait Sunday picture. Since I didn't have a chance to download yesterdays picks, I thought so too.

Camera Critters - My Ducks

They are not really mine but since they visit my stream every day for the past week I will refer to them as such.
IMG_1358

We where thrilled to have the ducks use our stream, the kids love watching them and now know these are Mallard Ducks and which is the male and female. Wildlife in my own back yard is always fun.

A Thousand Word Thursday - Preschool

Here is my Goddess on her birthday at school, discussing with her teacher who she should call on to answer a question. I love how Goddess is smiling at her. FYI - In regards to the lovely ensemble that Goddess is sporting. That is NOT what I picked out for her to wear. She was trying to match herself to her cake which was green, blue and had sprinkles.

Happy Earth Day - Book Nook Corner

Yes, today, April 22nd is the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day but let's not forget that......

The first one is Biscuit's Earth Day Celebration.

What I Can Tell You: One of the many things I love about the Biscuit books is that the kids feel they are reading because they can say the "woof, woof" part. It keeps them engaged and listening for their part. I loaded it to my daughter's preschool to read today and the kids loved it!  The price is also good. At $3.99 this is a wonderful book and well priced.  What a great first book to introduce children to conservation and recycling. Great for even the youngest listeners.

Next up, Global Warming by Seymour Simon

What I Can Tell You: A very interesting, colorful book about the beautiful planet that we live on and how our carbon footprint is changing our planets climate.  It is the contrast photos that were eye opening for me.

What I Want To Know: How come this is the first time I am hearing about Seymour Simon? His site is engaging, interesting and educational. I will be visiting often.

What I Can Tell You: The story talks about how polar bears are losing their homes due to the melting ice. It shows a mother and cub trying to survive as the climate around them changes.  The book also talks about changes you can make to help the polar bear and the planet. It begins at the end of hibernation and the mother bear poking through the snow so that she and her cub can search for food. The pictures are engaging for early listeners and questions are sure to arise. I thought that my daughter would be disturbed with one scene where the bears eat a seal.  She asked "is that blood?" I told her yes, and then we talked about the food the bears eat. She understood that the bears needed food to live and was fine with it although she went back to the page two times after we finished the book.

Changing Giveaway Format? What Are You Thoughts?

I love hosting giveaways but it is something I do for my readers so...here is my question to you:

What are your feelings about extra entries? Should there be extra entries?

As a mom who decided to start a blog, I look toward my peers to to show me how to run giveaways.  My peers were doing extra entries. I loved that I could get extra entries into giveaways that I was interested in so it seemed like a good idea.

This morning, while on 5 Minutes for Mom I read and participated in there poll.  While there I found this article from She Posts.Com. It was an interesting read and got me wondering how everyone feels.

Personally, I don't believe Giveaways are rigged. How? I would love to know. Many times sponsors offer my readers something and I receive nothing in return except the knowledge that one of my readers was able to enter and win. There are many times I have wanted to enter my own giveaway (especially when a sponsor is offering something great to my readers and don't have one for me.) I could say no to hosting since I am getting nothing of value in return, but love offering to my readers so I do the work required to host (and believe me, it is WORK, there is a lot involved in hosting giveaways) and love being able to send the email to whowever's number comes up from Random.Org.

So, with all of that, what do you guys think? Extra Entries? If I had more time this morning, I would do a poll, maybe I will get to that later today. Got to get the kids out the door now.

Let me know, I am interested in your answers

Memory Rewind - Goddess Turns 3

Here are some photos from Goddess' 3rd Birthday. Man, it just goes too fast.
This is Goddess' Godmother, my girlfriend Teresa, my babies and my sister's daughter, my niece. Sweet, I love all the smiling faces.

The twins were so cute that day. Seriously, don't they look like twins. They are no where near the same size but she was sitting forward and he is further back.

This picture reminds me of the one I posted this week. Ummm..things are a bit different no?!

FireFly Rain by Richard Dansky - A+ Writing and Storyline

In A Nutshell: This is a much needed change from the books I have been reading, while they are good, entertaining, well written this one was all that and called me from wherever I had laid it. I NEEDED to read it. The story starts out rather normal and slowly builds into a psycological thriller that had me unsure how it would end.

What I Can Tell You: This is Richard Dansky's first original novel and I am anxiously awaiting his next piece of work. The storyline is different, the writing spectacular and reminded me of Stephen King. Before children I was a big Stephen King fan and read and owned every book. After my kids, I gave up books that were considered horror. Firefly made me want to revisit the horror section of the book store. The need to finish the book and find out who was doing what and why the Fireflies stayed off the property was driving me mad. I sat at the kitchen table until I finished the last 60 pages with my cup of coffee growing cold.  I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of the mystery, terror, horror genre, or if you really want to read a fantastic book.

Why?

Recently one of my dead websites have been getting some hits on some old posts. Back when I was actively blogging on it, no one ever said anything. Too funny.

Memories Through Photography has been dead for over a year and a half now yet there has been activity that makes me visit and remember how I loved this blog.

I also had the Precocious Toddler and Goddess in Training . This was my sanity back in the day. I used to write in my children's voices to make light of the chaos that was surrounding me with a baby who screamed for 18 hours a day and a boy who threw tantrums. I was nursing, and alone with 2 kids all day and some of the night because my husband had just started his own company. I barely knew anyone local and spent all my time on the phone trying to survive. My kids are everything and I would do it all again.

ABC Wednesday - N

N for Nasty
Picture 971
We have told Goddess that drinking dirty water can make her sick. She still does it and a day after this she had a fever of 102.8. Coincidence maybe? But mom and dad used this episode to inform her of why she was so sick. What ever works people. Whatever works.

N for Nature

The Mommy Files by Jen Klein - A Review

I wish this book had been written 7 years earlier. When I was pregnant with my son I wanted a book that would simply give me the truth. I purchased so many books, each one said pretty much the same things but I didn't feel they were talking to me but rather at me.

What I Can Tell You:

What Jen Klein has done with The Mommy Files is just give you the brass facts without making you feel like you are a total idiot in one of the most important change to your existence.

The book reads like loving advice from your best friend.

Question, answer and inside secret advice all there in one handy, lightweight, paperback book that you will be able to throw easily in your pocketbook to read whenever you need advice.

My favorite sections happen in the middle of the book with The Mommy Mafia and Playgroups are for Moms not Children.

Goddess's 5th Birthday Party Was A Hit

Goddess turned 5 on the 14th and asked for a party with all her classmates. She has a very small class so we were happy to oblige. All but one came and she invited her out of class friends Cheeks and Blue to come to join. Cheeks was able to join.

We did a Save The Planet Theme party and typed the invites out on some lunch bags for the teachers to hand out.
Picture 923

We ordered a bounce house, pizza and while I tried to get out of making yet another cake by buying one, she insisted on "your cake and cupcakes". I guess I should be flattered that she wanted mine over one of the big, colorful, commercial ones I was trying to talk her into.

Goddess patiently waiting for her friends to come.

The kids bounced in the frigid air. It was overcast and only about 60 degrees. They had no shoes on and still managed to bounce and laugh for over an hour.

It was so cute when the girls broke off to have a tea party and put on tutus.
IMG_1239

It was such a great time but this mommy didn't feel like she got enough pictures. I did video tape the cake and "happy birthday" so hopefully I will get that up eventually.

At the end, I handed out some goody bags filled with crafts (that we were supposed to do at the party but the kids wanted to bounce), some blow up globes, a tree to plant, a rubber duck with recycle logo on it.

Goddess was so great with her gifts too. She would open the card and the kids would open her gifts. She didn't get to open anything but she seemed totally fine with it. After they left she was excited to look at everything. She loved having her friends over and all her gifts.

Here is a bee outfit she got from one of her friends.

Mommy and Me Monday Meme - My Son and Me

Yesterday was my daughter's birthday party with her classmates. We rented a bounce house and prayed the weather would hold up. While the kids were still eating, my son and I went down to enjoy ourselves and jump around. Lucky for me, my girlfriend Laurie grabbed my camera and snapped some photos of us.

Mellow Yellow Monday & Blue Monday - Meme Consolidation

I had breakfast at my girlfriend Dalia's house on Friday. I love getting together with her for so many reasons. One of them is that her Russian heritage allows me to try many different things. Like for breakfast, we had homemade lox on wheat bread with lemon, raspberry tea, yogurt, chocolate, and walnut cake with homemade strawberry preserves. Quite different from my American breakfast favorite eggs, bacon and coffee. I am so craving that lox but after having homemade I am sure that the store brought will be quite different.

If You Knew Suzy - A Beautiful Legacy to A Mother

In A Nutshell: Suzy was an amazing person and her daughter Katherine's account of life with her mom is a cross between childhood and womanhood. When we are daughters we are always our mother's child. No matter how old. Katherine writes to remember and to tell a story. The details are heartbreaking and knowing that it is a true story makes it that much more painful. However, the beauty of this legacy is one of the most moving  memoirs I have ever read filled with love, humor and memories. Katherine's honesty and candor can not be ignored as she searches to find meaning in the loss of her mother and her life as a daughter.

What I Can Tell You: As a grown child who lost her mother to Cancer. I knew this was going to be a hard book for me to read. What I wasn't prepared for was the beauty in which the story of Suzy would be told. Katherine writes with such eloquence, that I longed for the relationship I never got to have with my mother while appreciating the one Katherine was lucky enough to have with hers. I read this book from cover to cover in 3 hours, sitting at the table while I should be cleaning but unable to close the book.

Friday Fragments

-Awesome week. I got to see 4 of my girlfriends in one week and spoke to two on the phone. Love my girlfriends. Girlfriends are a main ingrediant to a fulfilled life.

-Ate lunch at a local Chinese restaurant. Newly opened. They should have stayed closed! I don't see myself eating there anytime soon.

-Goddess's birthday was awesome. She had very bad allergies but we loved watching her open her birthday gifts.

-Received a great note from Handsome's speech therapist. She says he is doing amazing on his comprehension and reading skills.

-Received word from Handsome's teacher that he is at reading Level D! Awesome considering he went in at reading Level C.  It is great to see that he is progressing. We have come a long way.

-Had an awesome breakfast today at my girlfriend Dalia's house. I got to meet her new baby and as always Dalia served up some very exotic yummies. Pictures of one to come since I just had to snap it.

-Goddess calls Lady Gaga, Gaga goo-goo. Hahahaha... "is this gaga googoo? Bwhahaah

-Goddess's big girl bed from BabyCribsPlus.Com came in. The mattress comes on Sunday! The crib will be taken down for the first time in 7 years. Wahhhhh, no more cribs necessary in my home.

-Season Finale of Spartacus is on tonight. If you have missed this amazing series on Starz. Fear not, a DVD is scheduled and you can still watch it On Demand. In case you need incentive and my words are not enough to get you watching. Feast your eyes on this:

VistaPrint Photo Book

When I was a kid, I loved pulling out the old family albums to see the pictures of my family from before I was born. Now, I have all my photos beautifully archived on my computer by Month and Year but the only way I view them is on a slide show on the computer. Back before I did this I had beautiful pictures printed out that I now house in many, many envelopes with the Month and Year written with a marker on it. .

When did I become so electronic?

A few years ago I made my husband an album using all the photos of him and the kids since they were born. It is beautiful and the kids love looking through it. It is the one thing they can do without me having to turn on the computer where they can see what they looked like when they were babies.

I believe it is time to create some more photo books.

Last month I started a folder on my computer of all my favorite shots from last year. I am only up to May but hope to be able to create myself a book by the end of the year to send out to my Dad, my in-laws and get on for myself for Christmas. The prices are so reasonable and the books come in so many convenient sizes depending on your needs.

Memory Rewind

Goddess was turning 1 here in all her pink glory. Now she would never ask for a pink cake!

Jane Slayre - Review

In A Nutshell:  This mash-up of Jane Eyre left me wanting to reach for my old copy. Jane Slayre, kept the integrity of the original while giving me a dose of my favorite genre right now. Vampires and werewolves.  Sometimes I found it hard to digest the drastic changes to a storyline that was so loved when I was a child. Jane Eyre is a Classic and some classic readers may find the not so subtle differences to their beloved story.

If you enjoy these mash-ups of the classics, this is a must read!

Goddess Is 5 Today

IMG_1153
Today was Goddess 5th Birthday. She had a very exhausting, stressful day. Yesterday she had a 102.8 fever. Today is was fine but her allergies were out of control. She was fine but subdued at school. Played at recess, picked some dandelions and then rubbed her eyes like crazy. When we got home she cried for 25 minutes while she rubbed her eyes.

Then she:

She kicked her teachers gift across the room
Complained about her eyes
Called me stupid
Complained about her itch
Told me she didn't want to have a birthday today
Opened a tutu, put it on, asked me to take a picture
Cried again

It was exhausting. Then we settled into I love yous. Sorry. Allergy meds which eventually helped her. She ate some lunch and prayed her Daddy would come home soon so she could open her birthday gifts.

Birthday Girl Turns 5

Last year, I wrote for her fourth birthday.

Here is her 3rd birthday post.

Here is her 1st Birthday post
IMG_1123
This is from the journal I started at the hospital called "Love Letters Love Mommy"

Here is this years list of the 10 Things I Love About You:

  • You love kisses and hugs
  • You love saying I love you
  • You tell us all the time how you are going to miss us when you move out but you will always come back to visit us.
  • You thank us for buying you things and taking care of you
  • You talk to God like he is your best friend
  • You ask us questions about our childhood
  • You are so funny
  • You make crazy faces
  • You are very sweet to your brother
  • You make us feel like we are the best parents in the world

Goddess,

We love you so much. You are a very special little girl with a very big heart. You amaze us with your analytical thinking, concepts and eagerness to learn. You are a very sweet girl who always tells us "I love you". You are the reason I know there is a God! I love hearing you talk to God at night as you say your prayers. You are amazing and a superstar. You march to your own drum and have no problem standing up for yourself, never following the crowd. I want to be just like you when I grow up.

My contribution for Mary's Ruby Tuesday is in a bowl of ice cream. Looks yummy right about now.

This weekend I took Goddess over to my girlfriend's house for a girly craft party. The girls were so fun to be around. All crazy, sweet, smart and funny in their own right. Here is a picture of Goddess's make your own "sundae" which I eventually finished because she didn't eat it. This is why I don't make my own.

Manic Monday - I've Gone Meme Crazy

This week the song that has been stuck in my head is by one of my favorite female singers Melissa Etheridge.

Blue Monday this week could be so many things. I have been going picture crazy lately.
My girlfriend Clary and I passed an airport this week and decided to stop and take a peek. Check out this plane:
the many circles
We were like two teens exploring and dancing in the empty plane. Fun, fun.

Mellow Yellow this week is a picture I took at my friend Laurie's this weekend for a girly craft party. This is a plate of candy the girls used to make candy bark.
A bowl of circles

Most of the pictures I have of me and the kids are timer pictures. I would say about 90% of them, I took. Whenever I see a mom and her kid together I always ask if I can take a picture of them because I think it is important to have those candid photos. I had the camera on the counter in the kitchen and grabbed Handsome for a shot. The kids are used to this and now run over to the camera with me to see what kind of picture we got.

1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a vet when I was 8-10 years old. When I was 11 my mom got sick and I loved the nurses who were able to help her. I wanted to be like that too!

2. If you had one word to describe yourself , what would you choose? Mother

3. You have been given the opportunity to create the half-hour TV show of your own design. What is it called and what’s the premise? It would be about me trying to get hot celebrities guys in bed.

4. You discover a beautiful island upon which you may build your own society. You make the rules. What is the first rule you put into place? Be Nice! If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.

From Saturday 9:

6. What age would you encourage your children to get married? When they are old enough to know enough. Not before 30 I would hope.

7. Who got married at the last wedding that you attended? Me!

8. Do you enjoy weddings and receptions? It's Ok. Not really my thing. I get lost in big crowds. I even felt alone and out of place at my own wedding.

From Thursday Thunks:

9. Your thoughts on truck drivers? Someone has to get the products were they need to go.

10. What is in your kitchen sink right at this very moment? A coffee and sippy cup.

Thanks for playing. See you next week!
