32 Candles by Ernesa T. Carter

Description: John Hughes's "Sixteen Candles" grows up in this wry and satisfying romantic tale in which an ugly ducking becomes the swan she always dreamed of and gets the prince--but will she be able to keep him?

What I Can Tell You:
32 Candles is Ernessa Carter's first novel. You will get a chuckle out of the lead character Davie Jones. If you are a child of the 80's and 90's you will love all the references especially to the movie 16 Candles starring Molly Ringwood.

Davie Jones, isn't white or a red head, she is black with a fro whose nickname is "Monkey Night" night on account that she is so dark and her mother and classmates think she is ugly. Poor Davie is just a regular girl who doesn't speak. Not that she can't, she just chooses not to. After her mother caught her when she was 5 years old wearing her heels and pretending to be Tina Turner complete with long towel hair and a towel dress. Cora, (the town trollop) beat her and that is when Davidia decided to stop singing and talking.

Living in her fantasy "Molly Ringwald" world served Davie just fine. She falls in love with a handsome football player named James Farrell but a school prank set by James' mean, jealous sister, goes to far and Davie hits the road. Luckily she meets good people and reinvents herself becoming a beautiful and successful lounge singer. James shows up again and doesn't recognize Davidia. Will she get the guy in the end? Will she get her Jake Ryan Porsche moment like Molly does in 16 Candles? You will just have to read to find out!

This is a great book club book. Davidia is far from perfect and she is a character you will fall in love with! Great debut novel for this talented writer.

Diverticulitis 101

So, if you have been reading my blog you know that last month I was diagnosed with Acute Diverticulitis. Unfortunately, my case was complicated due to also having a perforated intestine, and an infected abscess.

What is Diverticulitis:
I have researched this disease since I returned home. According the the Mayo Clinic it is, Diverticulitis occurs when one or more diverticula in your digestive tract become inflamed or infected. Diverticula are small, bulging pouches that can form anywhere in your digestive system, including your esophagus, stomach and small intestine. However, they're most commonly found in the large intestine.

According to the Diverticulitis Website- The problem seems to increase with age as the weak areas of the colon continue to balloon out and result in pockets. Ballooning is caused by pressure such as exertion when a person is constipated by lack of fiber in their diet or because of certain medications. It has also been attributed to some gallbladder surgeries that have positioned the gall duct to drip directly into the intestines after the gallbladder has been removed.

Diverticulitis is something that can hit anyone any time but is generally seen in almost half of all Americans over the age of 60, but it is diagnosed to a lesser degree to many who are in their 40′s (not in my case. Does this mean my body is actually over 60?).

Most cases of Diverticulitis are treated with antibiotics. If the flares up continue, surgery is suggested.

Keeping Diverticulitis at bay means a life changing diet. One rich in fiber once the intestine and colon have had time to heal. Until then a low-residue diet is the norm.

My low-residue diet consisted of:
  • V8
  • Soup
  • Tuna Fish
  • Scrambled Eggs
  • White Bread
  • Turkey Burgers
  • Mashed Potatoe
  • Yogurt - Activia and Dannon Whips
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Cream of Wheat
  • Chicken Breast
  • Attune Chocolate Bars

Tomorrow, God willing, I head back to the GI doctor for a my second follow up. I stopped my antibiotics 3 days ago. Yesterday, there was some mild cramping, today, some more cramping and twinges. I owe the hospital $19,000 and expect many more medical bills to pile up. Scary considering that surgery will probably be in my future. According the doctor, I can have surgery and still have diverticulitis attacks.

Great!

Everyone I have talked to either has had it or knows someone who has had it. Hopefully, somewhere along the way, someone will come up with something that aids in recurrences or abolishes it totally.

Wish me luck tomorrow, I am hoping for at least a direction tomorrow and less waiting time for the doctor 2+ hours last time.

Peace Out!

Summer Ideas to Keep Young Minds Alert & Active

I believe in kids having summer vacations. Some of my best childhood memories are of my carefree summer days, riding bikes with my friends, playing man-hunt, catching fireflies, having picnics, and swimming in the streams around my home. However, now that I am a mom, I look at summer differently. My parents weren't very involved in my day to day activities and were happy if we were out the entire day. With no cell phones I can't imagine how they did it. We were so young, under 11, roaming until.....

For my kids, summer is about spending time together, going to the local beach, playing in the sprinkler, watching movies, playing games, doing crafts, and sitting at the table for some structured "mommy school". There schedule stays pretty much the same, bedtime no later than 8:30-9:00ish because they are tired by that time anyway and mom and dad need quiet time.

When my sister-in-law visited last week, and saw all the workbooks and worksheets set up for Handsome and Goddess, her comment was, "looks like a fun-filled summer".  I just told her that the kids love it! They really do. They love the attention of one-on-one time with Mommy at the dining room table. They love the high fives and "I am so proud of you" when they do a great job! If my parents had done half of this, I might have been better than a "C - D" student.

Blue Monday - Gardening With Dad

Last weekend my husband sat down to do some gardening with the kids.

My daughter loves getting her hands dirty. My son not so much but they had a really good time, and I took the opportunity to snap some pictures for prosperity.

I seriously need a pair of these flip flops. They were a gift from Goddess' teachers for her birthday this year. So cute.

Attune Chocolate Bars Were Made Just For Me!

By now most of my readers know I was in the hospital for 2 weeks with a case of Acute Diverticulitis. I am still on a diet of low fiber foods and loads of probiotics. Eventually I will be increased to a full fiber diet but low residue is the norm to give your intestine time to heal.

Keeping your digestive system running smoothly is extremely important to everyone. These days I am very obsessed with researching my condition. Nothing I read gives me hope for recovery or comfort. This can happen again any time and probably will. I am feeling cramps now and worry this is the onset of another attack since it is my second day without antibiotics.

Last week I received a package of Attune Chocolate Probiotic Bars. My daughter saw Chocolate and immediately was interested. I told her these were mine!

Sunday Stealing: The Eighty Meme, Part One

Sunday Stealing: The Eighty Meme, Part One

Cheers to all of us thieves!

1. What curse word do you use the most? I drop the "f" word more than any when my kids aren't around. When they are, I use "silly" and "darn it"

2. Do you own an iPod? Nope. Nah! I am not an Apple anything girl.

3. What person do you talk to on the phone the most? Clarissa

4. Do you still remember the first person you kissed? Yes. It was nasty and my stomach turned. Times have changed. It is one of my favorite things to do, not that I do much of it these days. Ahhh..good times, good times.

5. Do you remember where you were on 11/9/01? Nope. I can barely remember where I was 11/9/09

6. What was the last movie you watched? The Book Of Eli. It was great.

7. Has anyone ever called you lazy? Yes. My husband.

8. Do you ever take medication to help you fall asleep? Never. I try never to take medication of any types unless absolutely necessary.

9. Has anyone told you a secret this week? Yes. It is a great one too...but not one I will be speaking of anytime soon.

10. What is the first thing you notice about the opposite sex? I notice their entire body! I am not attracted to skinny boys. I like them a little beefy. I notice the whole package then I move onto arms, stomach, and butt before looking further down. After taking all that in, I look at their face. By the way, would pass on all these faces. Not attracted to a single one. Would totally have to have them wear a face mask but the packaging is nice.

11. What are you looking forward to? Eclipse with Clary. We seriously need to get that on the calendar.

12. Do you own any band t-shirts? Yes. I haven' thrown out any thinking that one day my kids would like to wear my "vintage" tees. They will be "vintage" when the kids are finally wearing my size considering, how long I waited to have kids.

13. What will you be doing in one hour? It's Sunday. I try not to plan the day and roll with the house.

14. Is anyone in love with you? I hope so.

15. Last time you cried? I cried (not actual sobbing, just tearing) singing to my daughter last night. She asked me what songs I used to sing to her when she was a baby. I told her the four songs, she asked me to sing them to her. Told me that she really loved the way I sang them and fell asleep holding me. Sweet! It makes everything worth it.  I actually cried, a few weeks ago, during my 5th day at the hospital. Everything seemed so out of control and missing my family made things so much harder. I really just wanted to go home. It was the first time I was away from my kids and it was sooooooo long.

16. Are you on a desktop computer or a laptop? Laptop baby

17. Are you currently wanting any piercings or tattoos? I do want a tat. Since I was 18 it was something I wanted to do. My taste has changed and I want something much smaller. Eventually!

18. Would you ever date anyone covered in tattoos? Yes, if I was single. Tats are hot.

19. What were you doing before this? Making coffee, getting the kids drinks, writing a meme.

20. When is the last time you slept on the floor? Ummm...probably about 1 year ago. I used to sleep next to the kids when we were getting them to sleep in their big boy and girl beds.

21. How many hours of sleep do you need to function? 5-7 but I can function on as few as 3. I haven't slept in over 8 years and for many years only lived on 3-5 broken hours. So 5-6 straight is heaven.

22. Do you eat breakfast daily? Yes. I can do without dinner but breakfast is a must for me.

Shutterday - From On High

This Sunday, Shutterday is asking for pictures taken from "On High".

While this photo isn't from the highest point, it is the above. I love the prospective and the way my son looks so small behind my husband.

Self Portrait Sunday - June 27,, 2010

Here are the reasons for playing: Come on, admit it, you look through your photo albums or computer folders and see very few photos of yourself. Maybe it is because, like me, you are usually behind the camera. Or maybe, it's because you never feel you look good in photos so you tell everyone, "don't take any of me."

Well, take it...in the future you will wonder why you thought you didn't look good! You look good, be proud and show your smiling face!

Real quick photo! Too Close but it is Sunday so here I am.

Thursday Thunks -

1. It became officially summer on Monday. What's your favorite part of winter? I love the snow. Watching my kids play in the snow and the quiet calm surrounding us, makes me happy. I also love that I don't have to shave my legs as often since they are under long pants most of the time.

2. What was your worst summer vacation ever? Ummm...any one where I had no air condition. I hate the heat.

3. Kimber's husband just got the dream job that he's hoped for. So a big shout out to her and Anthony! Tell us about the best job that you ever had. I have always wanted to be the photographer for Playgirl.

4. Who is probably talking a load of crap about you right now? No one. If they are, more power to them.

5. An alien appears and offers you the opportunity to repeat one year of your life. You will still know everything that you know now. He explains that no matter what you do differently, when you are returned to the present nothing will have changed. What year would you pick and why? I would pick the year I had my son. It was the best year. I felt really happy and fulfilled. Being a mom was very important to me and I was so in love with my little family.

6. Name three things you have on you at all times. Explain why. My cell phone, my camera and my wedding ring. Why? Because!

7. When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper and mailed it? Umm...good question. I have one friend who refuses to do the electronic thing. She isn't on Facebook and doesn't check email. I haven't written her in a while. She probably is wondering what happened to me.

8. If you could have everyone in the blogosphere read just one of your posts, which post would you pick and why? This is hard. I have no idea but the one I would choose from my currents is the one called It was Like Lord of the Flies. There are a lot of people out there who aren't teaching their children manners, respect and empathy. I think these are very important lessons and everyone who is a parent should be teaching our future generation how to be good people.

9. I recently read that the music industry continues to decline at an alarming rate. In the last year it said the sales of Michael Jackson's and The Beatles' music are the only artists who sales continue to climb. The article stated that the two are holding up the industry. Have you bought a CD or mp3 of either artist recently? Nope. I have Michael Jackson albums (vinyl) but only 1 Beatle album.

10. What radio ad right now do you find so annoying that you'd rather have a tooth drilled than hear it again? None. I don't listen to anything but satellite radio.

11. Berleen walks into a bar on a hot Minnesota day. At the bar sits a priest, a rabbi and a minister. A ten foot duck walks into the bar right after Berleen. What drink do you think Berleen orders? Ummm...

12. There is a knock on your door. It can be anyone in the world. Who would you want it to be? Are you kidding, I would take any one of these guys: holding champagne, flowers, and massage oil. As you can see, totally an equal opportunity chick here.  From young to mature, dark to light and everything in between.

13. What would be the worst entertainment or sporting that you could be forced to watch? Tennis! Golf!

Memory Rewind - drippy

These are pictures of my crazy baby Goddess at 2 years old. You can see the drool pouring out of her mouth. We had a tent set up in the living room and she was just so excited to run in and out of it. We used to do a tent indoors often. I think we should revisit this tradition at least a few days this summer. The tent takes up a good portion of the living room/dining room, but it is so worth it.

Ruby Tuesday - Bowling

This weeks Ruby Tuesday are pictures I took right before the hospital. My son was invited to a class party at a bowling alley and when I noticed the balls waiting to be picked up, I knew I had to take a picture for Mary's Ruby Tuesday.

IMG_2199
My kids have asked to bowl forever and they loved it!

You would think Handsome got a strike or something with his exuberant face and sky high arms. He didn't but he hardly cared.

IMG_2208
Oh and Goddess has a red tie in her hair. I just noticed!
IMG_2212
Nope, she wasn't caught talking to the boys although that is what her face looks like to me. She was hanging on the ball return and I had told her 100 times not to because I was afraid her hair or finger would get caught. Yeah, yeah crazy mom I know! Donate to the kids therapy fund if you are concerned. They think everything is going to hurt, maim or kill them. My mother scared the crap out of me and I scare the crap out of them. See the cycle?

Blue Monday - My Mother's Day Gift

This past Mother's Day, I received a plant in a gold spray painted sneaker from Goddess. It was a craft she had done at preschool. Thankfully, the plant is doing very well, so well in fact we re-potted it into a bigger pot.

My Emergency Hospital Stay - Part 3

Part 1
Part 2

A picture of the kids that Teach sent me after they left me at the hospital on day 5.

So, this is the one that I have been avoiding. This is the post, I have been unwilling to put into words.

Part 2, left us with my spending 6 hours in the worst pain of my life.  So, after the 6 hours, two rounds of morphine, I am depressed and bitchy. The nurse of the day offers a smile asking me "who shit on your parade today?" I tell her no one that, I am just tired. My roommate offers up, "she just wants to go home!" I make a complaint about the chair being uncomfortable and notice a wheelchair in the doorway. My chariot has arrived to take me to another cat scan. My urine test must have showed something.

I am doing my second cat scan in less than 6 days. Great. The cat scan takes about 25 minutes and I am back in my room. A "new" chair is next to my bed and a bigger curtain is up, the last one was only 4 feet long, this one at least gives me a little privacy. The chair, a gift from the nurse who wanted to make my day must have been "the chair" 15 years ago. It is old, a bit broken but better than the piece of crap wood they had there.

A doctor comes in telling me that the abscess is a problem and that they will be doing a procedure to drain my intestine under the cat scan. I am not nervous and have no idea how they will be draining it but relieved that something will be happening. I knew something was wrong and I am being promised relief.

There are four techs, a surgeon and the Supervising Nurse with me. I am placed on the cat scan table and a number of pictures are taken to figure out the location for the drain.  A phone rings and the supervising nurse says, "I told you not to bother me for an hour, I am in a procedure." She states to a tech that another person has passed away in ICU. I am comforted but concerned that I am being attended by the Supervising Nurse. A surgeon explains that a catheter will be inserted into my intestine and that the abscess will be drained.

After every movement, they all leave to take more pictures. This is like a surgery but they are going from outside the body and everything needs to be in the right place. The surgeon gives me a local. I feel him cut me and flinch more from shock than feeling. Two people have my arms and two people have my legs. The surgeon, takes something that looks like a harpoon, puts both hands on the top and pushes. There is a collective moment of breath intake. They knew he is piercing my intestine and so do I. I cry and they all stroke my arms and legs. I feel the catheter being inserted. Once in, he puts his hands on both sides and pushes. Another gasp from everyone and I cry more. The push is enough to bring the pressure up the catheter and I hear them putting it in containers. There is one person holding my hand and I continue praying.

The doctor says that's all then shakes his head and with a syringe, pulls more fluid. He shows me the syringe. It is filled with thick, yellow, pus. He says, "that's not good" as he hands it over to the nurse telling her to send this to the lab too!

He stitches the catheter into me and tapes it to my side. It contains a bag which will hopefully collect the remaining fluid. They took 99ccs out of my intestine. He tells me that this should relieve some of the pressure I had been feeling.

I am taken back to my room and sleep under a cover of morphine.

My Facebook status that night: FU no water or food. A big FU to my extremely uncomfortable bed. FU to horrific procedures without being put to sleep!

My first meal in 32 hours was a cup of ice which I begged for.

That night I feel pain in my hand. I page for a nurse, no one comes. It is about 2:30. I go to the bathroom and again pull the string for a nurse. Hopefully they come. Someone might have fallen in the bathroom, you would think they would run in. No one does. Heading back to my bed, I again push the button looking for a nurse.

I wake up and it is 4:30 a.m. I turn on my light and this is what I see.

I am pissed off and page a nurse. No one comes! I stop the drip on the IV, remove the plug from the wall and head down the hall looking for a nurse. They stop me in the hall and walk with me back to my room. Obviously the vein infiltrated which is exactly what I knew at 2:30 a.m. Damn them! So, with diverticulities, a drain, a yeast infection, urinary tract infection now this! I am not happy!

My roommate is leaving which is totally fine with me. It was hell and the girl had issues that I was tired of hearing about. She didn't want to go. She loved her pain meds, being fed and watching TV.

When she leaves, I ask them to please let me have at least a night without a roommate. I would love to sleep!

One night alone but the next morning I get a roommate. She is 91 years and feel in the bathroom, breaking her hip. Her daughter is with her. When she leaves I tell her that I will make sure she is taken care of.

They operate on her hip that day. She is a pistol but gets very confused. I spend four nights talking to her through our curtain. It's Ok! You are Ok! You are at the hospital. You broke your hip. I'll get you a nurse. You are not wearing shoes. She cries all night. Waking and forgetting what happened to her and why she is here. Poor thing! I became her advocate when her daughter wasn't around. The nurses left her on bed pans for hours and took forever to get her one. They were awful and I wanted to tell them, just imagine this is you, how would you want to be treated?

Eventually she left before me too.

The drain comes out 3 days later and I am scheduled to leave. A surgeon visits and says the drain was taken out too soon. It is Friday and he says he is holding me until Monday! I call the house and tell my husband. I am crying and begging to come home. He and the kids were coming to get me. I just want to go home. They dangle the discharge papers in front of me and take it away. He tells me everything will be OK and that he didn't think it they would release me. I hadn't been on food yet.

I am told I will have a cat scan on Sunday. Sunday, I am told the machine is broken and that it will be tomorrow. I am upset! I want out! I want to see my kids, I have been in the hospital for 2 weeks!

My girlfriend Susan visits. It is pleasure to see her standing in my doorway. She saw my Facebook status and headed to the hospital from PA.

Facebook Status June 5: Another morning waking away from my family in an isolated, dirty, 4 wall room makes me so sad!

June 6th, I walk down the hall! Like a baby, I need a nap on my way back. I guess 10 days without food or water will do that to you.

I head to the waiting area to read. I just can't sit in my room anymore.

June 6th Facebook status: I hate not being in charge of myself! I hate this rollercoaster! I hate not having a direction! I hate being here!

I get to eat!

It isn't much but it is food and I am happy.
June 7th, I am going home! I am so happy. My husband and Goddess come. They eventually leave to pick up Handsome because being released takes quite a while.

They come to my room and grab my bags after more waiting. They head to the car and a nurse walks me downstairs. She gives me numbers of doctors to call for follow up and wishes me well.

I walk to the doors. The car with my husband and kids are in front. I walk through the automatic door. My first time in 14 days. I feel the sun, the kids are smiling in the back seat. I smell flowers. It is a beautiful blue sky day. I breathe and have to stop myself from sobbing. It is a religious experience. Not my first there were two others at the hospital that I will have to tell you about too!

With tears in my eyes I make it to the car on wobbly legs. I open the door and get in. We drive home and all I can think about is, "I love my family."

Kids Are Natural Nature Lovers - Enjoy a Staycation in Your Own Backyard

When I was asked to asked to participate in a Backyard Safari Outfitters review, I was thrilled. My kids, like most kids are Nature lovers.

I had just come out of the hospital and the kids were home from school, so I figured what better time to open the box from Team Mom and Backyard Safari Outfitters.

We received a Cargo Vest, as well as a Bug Vacuum, and a Mega View Periscope.

Since I wasn't moving much that first day, the kids busied themselves playing safari in the house with their stuffed animals, binoculars and using the Mega View Periscope between the bedrooms. I love toys and accessories that they can play with together. They actually played for 2 hours sharing the vest and laughing at each other through the periscope. It was really fun to watch them "pretend" to be on a safari.

Since then we have taken to the outdoors. My daughter especially loves looking at bugs in her bug finder. Usually we have to scoop them up or through the bug finder over them, close the lid and look at them through the magnifing lens. The vacuum, scoops them up from a safe distance and then you flip the magnifing lens so you can get up and personal with the bug without ever having to touch it. Love that!
IMG_2272
I love toys that force my kids to use their imagination and teach them something. Most kids love the outdoors and exploring and my kids are no different. The periscope is waterproof and we are excited to head to the lake with the periscope so we can see underwater without actually going into the lake.

The Backyard Safari Outfitter line includes over 30 different products. It's all the Essential Field Gear for anything, and everything, you want to do in nature.
IMG_2266
What a great way to get your kids active and outdoors exploring and enjoying the nature that is around them.

These make great gifts!

I will be getting all the summer birthday kids Backyard Safari Outfitter gifts from now on.

My Emergency Hospital Stay - Part 2

Part 1

I made my way back to the room and eventually was wheeled down the hall in a wheelchair for my first of what would eventually be 4 cat scans.

Eventually we ended up in a really big, cold room. They layered blankets on me and told me that I had to sign something about a dye they were about to put into my system. Doctors were nearby if I were to have a reaction to it. Umm...scary...and not really reassuring.

I am put on an IV and eventually the dye is inserted. They had told me that most people feel a metallic taste in their mouth and warm all over with the urge to pee. Great! Peeing on the cat scan table sounds like fun.

My eyes move up and I see the ceiling which has 4 separate light boxes with a blue sky and big puffy clouds. Focusing on that, I feel the dye enter my body. I say my first prayer while trying to focus on the cloud formations.

The doctors and tech leave the room and I am inserted into the cat scan about 8 different times. Each time, the machine tells you to take a breath, hold it and eventually tells you when to breathe again. Pain, discomfort, chills, loneliness all consume me. Again, I focus on the clouds and my prayers.

Eventually I am taken back to the gurney in the lonely room which will eventually become my home for in total 9 hours.  A doctor comes in telling me that they are waiting on Australia to read my scans. I hear them mention the scans for the next 4 hours.

Eventually I beg a doctor passing by to help me get to a phone and call my house. They wheel me out to a phone, the once busy ER is now just me and a guy who came in with a problem on his foot. He pleaded for mercy many times. I have no idea what they were doing to him but, he cried out like a woman many times. Poor thing.

They dialed my number and I hear "daddy's" voice. Ahhhh....finally my husband, the person who is going to tell me everything is going to be OK. I ask him if he got my messages he says no. I told him about my phone signal problem and that we are waiting for scans to be read overseas. The doctor is paged and I hear them say Australia's on the phone. I asked my husband to hold. I relay what the doctor is saying. Acute Diverticulitis with an abscess. I will be admitted. The doctor hangs up and I ask him to tell my husband on the phone what is happening. Mostly so I can hear it and not have to relay it and because I didn't feel very in control and needed someone to be.

They tell him they are admitting me. My husband tells me that Handsome had just fallen asleep and that he will put Goddess to bed (they thought they were going to pick me up eventually). It is late and the kids have school tomorrow. He says he will call me in the morning to see what I need him to bring.

I am wheeled back to my gurney and told that they are waiting on a nurse to assign me a bed. The wait is over 2 hours. I am severely dehydrated, starving (my last meal was at 7:00 a.m. and it is after 11:00), I am in severe pain (refusing medication thinking I was going home and didn't want the kids to see me) and confused. Now that I knew I was staying I wanted pain medication. They gave me morphine which I threw up 15 minutes later.

Begging for a room and a bed I was finally wheeled up it is after 12:45. My roommate is still awake and not happy that she is getting a roommate. I beg for water and I am told that nothing will be given to me but that they will bring me a sponge so I can swab out my mouth.

They do, an hour later. the water on the sponge is horrible and I try to sleep. My roommate has her light and TV on. She is 24, a junkie and pregnant. A nurse comes in and tells her at 2:00 a.m. that she has a roommate and should let me sleep. The girl carries on about her not wanting to turn the TV off, that they should have checked into her sleep history before giving her a roommate. I put my sock over my eyes and try to sleep. I do, until a nurse comes in to draw blood at 4:30. Great!

In the morning I am still in severe pain, hungry and have a severe headache because, well, I am a caffeine addict.  It will take 5 days before my head doesn't hurt from not having coffee.

The morning is long, the afternoon longer and the night horrific. I have to unplug my IV every time I have to go to the bathroom.

My roommate comes over and offers a magazine. I say thanks but never read it. I refuse to turn the TV on because that means more money and that I am not leaving. I want to go home.

Clary visits and I am so excited to see her. A friendly face to spend some time with. She offers to pay for the TV, I refuse.

Eventually, my husband brings the kids and I am so happy to see them. It is my first night away from them ever! They leave 20 minutes later. There really isn't much for kids to do at a hospital.

Another night of pain, medication not working. My IV's keep blowing and I my arms look like a junkies.

On the 26th, I am given a swab for my mouth again. My first bit of water in 2 days.

On the 27th, I am given my first potassium drip. It feels like my arm is on fire and I am not happy! I can't take much more pain. The morphine doesn't help and the IV makes me have to pee all the time.

Lauri and Clary come up and wash my hair. I feel like a human for a moment.

They remove my IV and give me oral antibiotics. I am doing hall laps because I am told that I will be leaving tomorrow. Hooray!

I am given broth, tea and apple juice (my first meal in 3 days).
2 hours later, yogurt, ice cream and apple juice.
2 hours later (dinner time) the nurse walks me over to the food cart and shows me two choices (chicken salad on cucumbers which I am told I shouldn't eat because of the seeds and roast beef on white bread with lettuce.

I turned to the nurse and say "I can eat this?!" She says, yes..don't eat the tomatoes because of the seeds. Going back to my room, I take the tomatoes off the sandwich and dive in. It tastes great. I am concerned but figure they are getting me ready for a low-reside diet so I can leave.

In the morning, I am brought cereal (rice crispies), a kaiser roll with butter and jam and coffee. I eat, so happy to have food. Everything seems great but I suddenly feel a white-hot-sharp pain. It blinds me. I ask the nurse if she thought it was just a digestive, gas thing. She says probably, you have a lot of gastric sounds coming from your belly (which she and everyone else has been listening to with their stethoscope).

Suddenly the pains are so bad I have to stand, stretching my arms over my bed I try to breath through them. My back hurts, my stomach hurts, my butt hurts, my vagina hurts. An aid calls the nurse over who is at this time talking pain meds with my roommate who lives around her next pain med. The aid is concerned. She is young and hasn't seen me do anything like this in 3 days. The nurse comes over and asks what is wrong. I can barely speak and say the pain is soooooooooooo bad, I can't see, I can't breathe. She tells me to try to go to the bathroom. She walks me over, I need all her support. I tell her that I am going to pass out (I see the darkness coming and hear buzzing in my head, I know when it will happen). She tells me to calm down and breath. She just keeps saying, "this is very bizarre." She is no more than 26 and I want to scream at her but can't talk. I am scared! She has no words of comfort and keeps telling me to calm down. I can't. My roommate is saying, she IS not like this, something is wrong. I ask, "Please, someone help me, make it stop!" The pain is unbearable. The nurse lies me down in my bed.

It feels like my intestines are going to explode. I spend the next 6 hours in the worst pain I have ever or will ever experience in my life! Crying and sobbing I try to relax, praying that someone will help me. Pleading with God to send angels of mercy and take away my pain.

Ahhhh...Part 3 coming

My Emergency Hospital Stay - Part 1

It will be a week ago tomorrow evening that I was finally released from the hospital and I would love to think all of my readers who took the time to comment on the blog, through email and even a card. Thanks you so much!

Here is a time line of some of the most confusing, scary, isolating, lonely days of my life.

May 24th, I woke with some mild stomach cramps. Goddess threw up in the morning so I assumed that perhaps we both had a stomach virus. Around 12:00 p.m. I was typing out my Lord of the Flies post and realized that it actually hurt to touch my stomach (left of my belly button.) The cramps were getting worse so I got up and started considering heading into town to mail out some packages, drop off some movies and eventually head over to the school to pick up Handsome.

When we got to the library, my cramps were severe and I told Goddess I was sorry but we would not be able to go to the library and dropped the books at the drop box. Getting back in was painful and my stomach ached terribly.

We drove back home and I took my temperature. It was 99.1. I lied down on Goddess' bed and put the TV. Cramps, stomach hurt to touch and now a fever! What the hell. Things were not good and I knew it. I asked Goddess to get the phone because I wanted to call "daddy" because I thought I should go to the hospital.

When I called and explained what was wrong he told me he was coming right home. I have never been asked to be taken to the hospital. We picked up Handsome from the bus stop and headed to an emergency center a town away.

I was actually praying that he would tell me that I had a stomach virus and the pains were gas. We were the only ones there and the kids had to go to the bathroom so "daddy" took them. They were finally gone and I was able to cry. The pain was so bad, I had been holding in the cries for everyone's sake but the nurse came over very concerned. She quickly ushered me into a room. The doctor came in 3 minutes later and in literally 10 seconds diagnosed me with Diverticulitis. He said that I had to get to the hospital right away. He came out and told my husband, to get me to the hospital right and call him tomorrow to let him know (he didn't charge us and we still have to call him).

On the way, I was very concerned. He had mentioned that if something was to rupture, it could be very dangerous. Every bump was excruciating and I felt like a ticking time bomb.

Eventually "daddy" started telling me when a bump was coming.

When we got to the hospital and parked, he turned and noticed that the kids were asleep. I told him not to wake them, that I would walk into the ER and call him when he could pick me up. It was 4:45 p.m.

He drove me to the door and I walked in. Thankfully triage was empty! Thank God! I was seen right away and assessed. The nurse eventually took me to a room and told me that someone would be in to register me. They gave me a gown, told me to change. I got on the gurney to lie down because I couldn't sit anymore. The pain was intense and I was so nervous.
Thinking that I had a signal, I IM'd "Daddy" a few times including this picture. He wasn't getting them but this picture makes me nauseous when I look at it now

I was seen by a doctor and told I would have to drink something for a cat scan. I drank it and was told that I had to wait 2 hours. Lying there in scary pain, alone, no phone signal, wondering what was happening at home and wishing I could talk to "daddy".

Eventually I asked to use the bathroom not even sure if I could make it down the hall. I went, then felt sick, dizzy and threw up, pulling the call button, as I hurled into a garbage can. I was in a kneeling position, full of fever and pain asking the nurse to help me up. They said, "take your time" and I eventually managed to pull myself up the wall.

Part 2 Coming!

Get Touch'd - Review

Ahhhh....after two weeks in the hospital, you can only imagine how much this little old body needs some pampering.

When I got home on Monday evening, I glanced at all the unopened packages waiting for review. Too tired I walked by the mound to the deck, for some fresh air. Tuesday, Clary came over after picking Goddess up from school and asked if there was anything she could do for me. We looked at the packages and she started gathering them to sort. One of them was Touch'd!

What I Can Tell You:

I received a Sugar Scrub that smells like exactly what you would imagine drinking a Pina Colada on the beach would smell like. The texture, smell, and look are very luxurious! The feel on your skin is exquisite. You feel totally pampered, completely relaxed and the scent transports you to a far away spa where you can escape the challenge of life if only for a little while.

My daughter thinks it smells so good she wants to eat it. Although, I wouldn't recommend that I know what she means. After the hospital I really needed to start focus on my skin again. I have used the sugar scrub on my elbows, knees and heels. After the first use you feel the difference. I honestly, could not stop touching my newly exfoliated skin.

Desire Me by Robyn DeHart - Review

What I Can Tell You:

Oh lala...this book is so good! I loved it from the beginning. When Max as a teen risks his life to find the map of Atlantis to the very end. Max and Sabine are intoxicating. The cover is super hot and you will find yourself yearning for Max and Sabine to fall in love!

Plus the legend behind Atlantis and the mystery that surrounds this myth has always sparked imagination. What happened may never be known but I love Robyn's take on it.

An Absolute Must Read - The Girls From Ames - A Story of Women and Friendship

What I Can Tell You: I believe this to be a complete testament to the love and sisterhood women feel for each other. I loved all of it, from cover to cover you will read how friendship even through the years and miles created a support system for the women of Ames. All now in their 40's, most meeting in childhood, these ladies love, support, lean on, care about, listen, advise, and comfort each other with familiarity that you can only get from your girlfriends. Understanding, acknowledging and accepting their differences and loving each other through good times and bad in non-judgemental love makes you happy to even have a part of what they have.

I love the beginning which has a picture of each of them from childhood, college and adulthood which I referred to in the beginning while reading. I constantly turned back to see which one they were referring to.

You will find yourself relating to each of them at different times. From the lose of virginity, the lose of a parent, the lose of a child, a friend, a divorce, health issues, the women remained there for each other first through mail than email with reunions in between.

Being in my 40's I loved reading about the shows they watched, Dinah Shore, Mike Douglas, The Partridge family. Their crushes were reminiscent of mine and I found myself longing for my childhood friends and connections.

Reading about the lose of Karla's daughter was probably the hardest for me. I cannot imagine and picturing all the women gathered during the memorial in a closed room, supporting their friend just made me so sad.

This book is a beautiful tribute to the glorious, beautiful, relationships women have.

Jeffrey Zarlow did a fabulous job of recounting the intertwined hearts that keep these women together.

Summer is Here And There Is Still Time To Get Beach Ready

Before my medical leave I was given the opportunity to try out something called Belly Burner Belt.

I am always interested in these commercials on TV and have tried so many of the As Seen On TV products. The commercials make everything look so easy and a total and complete must have in your life.

This was a product that I had not seen before and looked easy enough. Wrap the Belly Burner Belt around your middle, put on your clothes and waste away the pounds to a leaner, meaner, flatter, belly!

We all want those washboard abs and ummm...why not give it a try?

What I Can Tell You:
  • The Belly Burner Belt is comfortable and fits all sizes.
  • The Belly Burner Belt makes you feel warm while you wear it.
  • The Belly Burner Belt comes with a Bobby Waldron Blazing Abs workout DVD
  • The Belly Burner Belt makes no claims about not having to work out or eat right while wearing it.
  • The Belly Burner Belt is very inexpensive at just $7.95 to try for 7 days and $39.90 if you choose to keep it.
  •  The Belly Burner Belt also comes with 3 free gifts include Bobby Waldron’s exclusive Exercise and Food Journal, Meal Planner Nutrition Log and At-A-Glance Calorie Counter.
With all that said, I cannot tell you that it works. I have been unable to think about exercise until I am well, but I wish all of you a very healthy, slimmer summer!

This may just be the thing that works for you!

Febreeze Home Collection - No Spill Wood Diffuser

Febreeze is a very big name in my house. I use it all the time, especially to freshen linens, the couch, curtains and rugs. I love it! There are so many options and scents to choose from.

I was contacted to review one of the new Febreeze items from the Home Collection called Febreeze No Spill Wood Diffuser.

In the past we were big incense and candle burners (pre-kids). After kids I went to the plug in or time blast types. Last year, I tried some of the reed type fresheners that were on the market but always had to worry about placement, if they spilled or a child got near them, I could only imagine the clean up.

When I opened the Febreeze No Spill Wood Diffuser I thought, OK, how does the scent come through the wood. I couldn't imagine that this would work.

I put it on my hutch and waited. Nothing. I loved the smell when I was close to it but, otherwise I never smelled it. I asked everyone who came in if they smelled it. No one did. THEN, two days later (3 weeks ago now), I thought.....wait...what is that? I can totally smell it. I LOVE IT! The oil gets absorbed into the wood and diffuses through the air. LOVE IT!

It's pretty, and smells amazing!

It comes in 5 scents
  • Willow Blossom
  • Pomegranate Mango
  • Green Tea Citrus
  • Cranberry Pear
  • Honeysuckle Orchid
I received Honeysuckle Orchid and want to try Willow Blossom next. It makes a great hostess gift because it is pretty!

Life and Health Update

Dear Family, Friends, Readers, Sponsors, Public Relations Contacts and everyone else in between,

I have so much to tell you guys. Things have been a major rollercoaster ride for me. After 2 weeks in the hospital and no answer yet I am feeling many things but mostly, I feel so relived to be back home with my family.

My husband did and is doing a phenomenal job with the kids which really warms my heart to see. My friend Clary has really been there to offer assistance with the pick up of Goddess and friends have kept me in their thoughts.

Things will be very slow going but I am motivated and excited to get back to my life.

Hang in there while I sort through the piles of mail, packages and email to make sure that I can still offer my readers giveaways that were established prior to my medical leave.

For everyone who has hung in there. Thank you and I appreciate your friendship!

Love, Maria
