A Family of Bears & Their Adopted Baby Fox Enjoy A Big Day Out

The 411:

This is an absolutely adorable book about a tiny 5" family. It contains whimsical characters and a few words per page which would be great for reading at bedtime.

The story isn't deep but children will love the graphics and the idea of this tiny 5" bear family with an adopted fox baby who live in a tree and meet tiny little creatures along the way.

Reading Will Give You Wings #readabook

The 411:

Lucas wishes he could fly. He makes himself wings and even asks Santa for a pair. Much to his disappointment he gets only toys wings which don't work! One day his mom hands him a book that allows him to fly using his imagination. Lucas gets the reading bug and reads so many books that he builds a huge mountain that takes him further into the clouds than he ever thought possible.

This is a great book for kids filled with great illustrations and a clever story line. It shows how reading books allows us to go anywhere we want just by reading. Reading is something we can enjoy all the days of our life. I hope to be like Lucas and never stop flying.

Meet Stripes A Cat Whose Personality Is Larger Than Life

The 411

A cute tale about a cat who has always wanted to be a tiger. Stripes has a larger than life personality. He dreams big and when he gets the opportunity to live his dream he gets his chance.

When Calls The Heart Forever In My Heart

The 411:

What I love most about this show is how family friendly it is. I never have to change the channel because an inappropriate scene surprised me and the kids are awake. This is a wholesome show that everyone in your family can watch.

There are so many characters but our main characters are still favorites. This time our favorite teacher introduces her students to the idea of a Science Fair. She shows them a volcano that gets even the ones who aren't interested really excited about entering and the possibility of a scholarship.  She also has to contend with her own thoughts as Jack's old love Faith who has called off her engagement and has decided to stay and run an infirmary.

Cody and his sister are finally reunited and when Abigail tosses the word adoption on the table everyone is very excited to know they will always be together but could a "relative" who suddenly surfaces change all that?

This is a wonderful show and I only just touched on some of the story lines of this wonderful family show. Binge watch and get caught up now.

A Comprehensive Cornhole Game Guide

Cornhole is a popular American tossing game that is believed to have originated on the West side of Cincinnati. Since its inception, it has grown to become a popular sport across the United States. While simply constructed, the game still provides a fun, wholesome challenge, and has now become an official sport followed by ESPN.

Equipment

While called by a variety of names, such as Baggo or Bean Bag Toss, the official Cornhole game has standardized rules. Cornhole matches involve from 2 to 4 people, and are played with two platforms and two sets of bags.

Each set has 4 bags filled with dried corn kernels, that are distinguishable by color. Official Cornhole rules require that bags measure 6" x 6", and that they be double seamed. Each bag should weigh no more than 16 ounces, although this may vary by 1 or 2 ounces, according to the fabric used to construct it.

Two 2' x 4' wooden platforms are placed opposite one another at an angle. A 9" hole appears on the far end of each platform. The top edge of each playing surface should be 1' above the ground. The bottom edge should be from 3" to 4" above ground.

Each pitcher is required to maintain constant contact with a designated pitcher's box while holding and releasing the corn bag. His or her opponent is required to stand behind the platform at least 2' behind the person who is pitching
Scoring

Cornhole matches are played in frames or innings. In order for a player to gain points,
the bags must be tossed into the 9" hole or land on the board itself. It can be knocked into the hole by another bag, slid into the hole or tossed directly into it. When a player achieves the ultimate goal of passing the bag through the hole, he or she attains 3 points. When a bag lands on the board and remains there at the end of the frame, the player receives a single point. A toss is worth 2 points if it lands on the board and hangs over the hole without falling through it. The match is played until the first team or individual player reaches 21 points at the end of a frame.

Doubles Play

Cornhole can be played one on one, or in doubles, where each team consists of two opponents. During this version of the game, one person on each team pitches from one platform and the other pitches from the other.

The Laurie Berkner Band Is Back With New Original Songs #laurieberkner

The 411:

I have an 11 and 13 year old and have been listening to Laurie for much of their childhood and now that they are grown and have their own taste I have been sharing my love of Laurie's catchy hook driven, preschool songs with my preschool class. In the morning during circle time the kids (2-3 year olds) and I sing Bumble Bee and We Are The Dinosaurs while moving our bodies, laughing, clapping and smiling along to Laurie.

Superhero contains 21 new songs plus 2 bonus songs all written for ages 1-7. I cannot wait to bring it into work.  Written by Laurie and containing songs about bicycles, tea parties and fireworks this CD will get the kids moving and grooving. Superhero contains many music styles like 60's pop, lullabies, reggae, Latin and even a duet with Ziggy Marley.

I think my class will love the title song Superhero where we can pretend to be Superheros during our morning stretch as well as This Is How I Do It which has Laurie singing about jumping, spinning and flying like a butterfly. Perfect for kids to move to. I am already thinking about ways to incorporate this into our daily circle time. Umbrella, Elephant In There, The Music In Me, In and Out Take A Trip,  will be great too!
Over the past week I have been singing Bubbles which reminds me of the Go Go's in the car while driving the kids to school and I was thrilled to hear she included a dance remix of We Are The Dinosaurs! It is an absolute favorite but I think my preschoolers will love the original better.

If you have little ones check out Laurie. Her music is so much fun, she has a great voice and the songs really do get kids moving which is so much more important these days with so many kids addicted to their screen time.

Visit The Laurie Berkner Band site for concert locations and dates and so much more.

When Calls The Heart - Heart of A Hero

The 411:

If you love Little House On The Prairie you will love When Calls The Heart. It is a story of drama and romance.  The characters are wonderful and if you have never watched catch up by binge watching on Netflix now. This DVD has two stories from Season 3.

In these episodes several characters must face their fears. A young girl has to learn to let new friends in. Faith Carter an engaged nurse must make a decision on her future and Pastor Frank's old friends are making his life miserable and Bill must do the right thing just to name a few.

I personally love When Calls The Heart and mention it whenever someone mentions needing a new show to watch.

Unblemished by Sara Ella

The 411:

I found it interesting that I would be reading Unblemished at the same time I am reading Wonder with my son. Both characters are extraordinary people with different faces. Both characters are stronger than the rest. Both characters are extremely lovable. Both characters feel ugly. That is where the comparison ends because in Unblemished we are dealing with the supernatural in a fantasy world which contains time travel, love triangles, mystery and science fiction.

Personally I liked the book immediately but found myself disinterested in the first few chapters. Not sure why that is though because when I was reading it I enjoyed it but it wasn't one of those books that called to me when I wasn't reading it. What I DID love about this book was all the Pop Culture  and music references. I found it fun, modern and kept me very interested and sometimes laughing at the inclusion.

Unblemished is a story inside of a story and I believe many will love the many different realms Eliyana encounters on your journey to truth.

My New Jewelry Cabinet Makes Life So Much Easier And Makes Me Feel Girly

Oh my gosh...why didn't I get one of these sooner. I have a LOT of jewelry. This free standing lockable full length jewelry box is behind a mirror and has places for everything including jewelry boxes.  I am so happy with it!

The Langria Mirror cabinet comes in a large, flat box in 5 pieces which need to be put together. It took me and my 11 year old 15 minutes to put it together and think my husband could have had it done in 5 but I was counting on my 11 year old to screw it in while I held the mirror. She dropped the large decorative screw three times. Grrrr....

What I love best about the mirror is although it is full length it doesn't take up a lot of real estate in my already very crowded bedroom. There are four positions to place the mirror in using dowels.

On the inside of the jewelry box are:

    108 earrings slots
    36 earrings holes
18 necklaces (6 with a pocket for the pendant to hang into - perfect for my glass pendants).
18 bracelets hooks
    84 rings slots
    11 separate shelf-like compartments

Illuminature by Rachel Williams - Look For This In The Maria's Space Holliday Gift Guide 2016

The 411:

If you are looking for something different and love giving books, this is the perfect book for all ages.
The book is broken into different locations and includes the day and nighttime animals you will find there as well as the environment they live in.

It is an informative book but totally different than anything I have ever seen before. Using a viewfinder with the different colors the reader will see different scenes on the page.

I wish I had filmed my daughter when she first started looking at it. She was truly amazed at how the book worked and all the animals she was able to spot through the included viewfinder. It is truly magical.

Light Up A Room Or Your Party With This Ocean Movement Light

If you were to come into my house you would know we love ambient lighting. We have back lighting on the TVs, Northern Light nightlights in two bedrooms and now we also have this one which makes it look like my daughter's room is underwater.

The light comes with a stand and remote control which makes it easy to change colors and speed depending on your mood or need.

There are 7 colors to choose from as well as an auto mode or sound activated mode depending on the noise in the room.

My daughter's friends love sleep overs here and always ask for one of our special night lights. This has been the favorite. It is so much fun.  You can slow the lights down, speed them up or just change the colors.

Indoor or Outdoor Princess Tent With Carrying Case For Your Little Princess

The 411:

This pretty princess tent is perfect for girls and surprisingly sized. It stands about 55" high and 39" diameter. Here is a photo of my 4'10" 11 year old with it.Even my 6' tall husband can sit inside it comfortably.

There are tent poles that need to be tied to the inside which took my daughter about 4 minutes. They are jointed and easy to set up.

The tent has pretty pink curtains that can be tied up or left to hang down.

It is way better than expected and can be placed in a small carrying bag for taking taking or keeping at grandma's or the babysitters. Great for classroom play as well.

Crooked Man on Syfy

"The Crooked Man," a Syfy original movie which aired Saturday, October 1 on Syfy 9/8c as part of "31 Days of Halloween.  If you didn't have a chance to see it, make sure to check it out.

The Crooked Man reminded me of The Babadook and Freddy Kruger. My husband and I are huge Syfy fans so I know what to expect and we allowed my 11 year old to watch with us although this is not the norm in my house. She wants to watch all horror movies but we know this means a lot of sleepless night for us so it is usually no.

Crooked Man is based on a fable from the same name.
There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile.
He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile.
He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together in a little crooked house.

In Crooked Man he makes his appearance after 4 little girls including the star of our movie Olivia conjure him up at a slumber party by reciting the poem.   Fast forward to modern day Olivia is returning to her home town after being locked up in a psychiatric hospital. But some folks don't want her back.

Olivia swears that the Crooked Man exists he not only exists he is killing again now Olivia needs to prove it to others before he kills the people she cares about again.

Is it  a great movie? It's a Syfy original. That isn't putting it down it is what it is. There were a few times I thought, wait...what? It's entertaining enough. Not too scary although the way he the Crooked Man moves is down right creepy. I was excited to see Amber Benson (Tara) from Buffy the Vampire Slayer even if she was scary with her red rimmed eyes.

All in all, if you family is like mine and likes to laugh at horror movies. This is a good one.

Monitor, Soothe and Find Out The Temperature With Hello Baby

=

The 411 by Maria:

Hello Baby is the perfect baby monitor. It is way smaller than when my kids were babies and has many more options than the ones just a few years ago.

Pros:

The camera is small enough to be set up anywhere.
Transmits up to 900 feet away
2 Way talk. You can hear the baby but also you can talk to them or soothe them if they start waking.
Clear, color picture
It has very clear night vision
You can check the temperature of the room without going in and set an alarm if the temperature goes above or below a certain set temp.
You can pan, tilt or zoom on the camera from your remote
You can play a lullaby from your remote piece

Night time Stormy vision

We don't have a baby but have used it near our guinea pig cage and think this is great for the days I am working from home and one of the kids are sick.

Fun With My Kids At Spirit Halloween Store

The kids and I headed to Spirit Halloween Store for some fun and high jinks and it ended in some tears.

My baby holding this baby!

This little guy swings

Scary and creepy

One of my favorites of the Day! My son holding this American Horror Story Clown Head and his face!
She was so excited at some spots but horrified at others. She looks uncomfortable walking through the masks
My son was having the absolute best time

It was all fun and games until my son put on this mask and came over to talk to me. My daughter grabbed me, started shaking and was literally sobbing. At first I thought she was kidding but a quick glance at her face told me that she was not. She was hysterical and it lasted quite a long time. I was getting those sly, sympathetic looks from other moms with even younger daughters. I find it so crazy especially since my girl loves Halloween. Oh well...she isn't the first person to ever fear clowns.

Used a Wide Angle Lens To Capture The Beautiful Day

My daughter looking out at the waters of the Renaissance Faire on a beautiful September day. I wasn't even aware of the yellow umbrella when I took the photos. All I saw was her adorable outfit, the blue sky and the green all around us.

Black And White RenFaire

My daughter and I love heading to the Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo NY every year. It is such a good time. Good food, good drink, good people, good memories!

Family Night Suggestion - Top That Game

The 411:
We received Top That from Blue Orange Games and have played it at least 25 times. Whenever my daughter's friends come over they insist on this one to start their time here and my daughter and I have gotten so good at this game we have started counting aloud to 5 after turning over the card to see which one of us is the winner.

To Play you take the deck of cards and place in the middle.

Give each person (up to 4 players) a set of props which includes a black top hat, white bunny, coin and a red and yellow cylinder.

Once you turn the top card over everyone races to see who can stack your props to match the card.

If an object is grey it must be hidden inside the stack but if the object is missing it must not be included in the stack.

It is a fun game great for problem solving, visual perception, fine motor skills, increasing processing speed, focus and attention.
