Far enough away from the holidays to feel like a night out without the stress of the holidays and all you have to get done. Had a good time with my from Clary. We were friends first now co-workers. It is a good thing to have a long time friend at your newish job. I am there since September 2016.

Wanting To Feel Fine In My 50’s

This August I will turn 52. It is not so much the number I am not not loving but the fact that I am getting older which makes me think about old age and wondering what does life have in store for me?  Will I love to be an “old woman? How old will my kids be? Will my husband and I still be together? Will I suffer? Be lonely? Be bitter?  These are not things I want to think about. They creep into my mind every once in a while.

My dream is to live as long as possible but still be a viable, active, and loving person who has family around me and wants to still be with me? Is that too much to ask for?

I try to take care of myself. When I am sick or feel something is wrong I go to the doctor.

I don’t eat whatever I want but ever did. This doesn’t mean I eat only healthy but I make a conscious effort that if I am going to eat something not great, I don’t eat much of it.

Usually I get about 6-8 hours of sleep.

I drink a lot of water, eat healthy foods and try to move around.

Don’t and never have smoked. I am the occassional beer, wine drinker (prob 8-10 a year if that counts). Never took a non-prescribed drug.

Stay away from take out.

Have a good attitude about life, people and things.

All good things no? BUT....I don’t always get enough sleep. Don’t always make sure I get enough servings of fruits and veggies.  Don’t always get enough exercise and I am at least 30 pounds over-weight.

So...what am I doing to rectify this and take me into my 50s and further in a better way than I spent the past 10 years? I joined a gym.

What else can I do?

Sick For 5 Days Put My Photo Challenge on Hold But I Am Back

I have been trying to take at least 1 photo a day this year. I was so sick last week but did take pictures. They are not the best of pics but here they are.

Day 9 - I baked eggs for the first time. It was so easy. 400 degrees for 7 minutes and they came out exactly like I like them (over easy).

Day 10
My daughter asked for Nutella/Banana crepes. I love making them it makes me feel like I know how to cook.

Day 11
My sickness haul. CVS was my very best friend. I needed all of this and then some.

Day 12
Luna totally judging me and all my coughing. She couldn’t sleep with my hacking, sneezing and nose blowing.

Day 13
When you have a cat these kinds of scratches are inevidable. She was laying on my chest when the front door opened. She is a rescue so still sccared sometimes. Her back paw got me good!

Day 14
I made carrot, ginger, lemon soup. It was amazing and exactly what my cold asked for. Never made it before but pllan on making it again soon.
Day 15
It was time to take the tree down so although we were all going to miss it we decided today was the day. I was feeling better and it was above 30 so the attic wouldn’t be too bad.

The Shoe Dryer That Made My Life Easier

Over the past week and a half I have been using a shoe dryer for my husband’s boots and my son’s sneakers. They have had to do some shoveling lately and the boys always come in drenched. The work boots usually get placed near the wood stove and the sneakers tossed in the dryer for a few. Now we just toss the boots or sneakers onto the shoe dryer.

My husband’s work boots take 25 minutes and my son’s sneakers 35. I wasn’t sure how good this would work but it is easy and can be dismantled when not in use and stored in a box. I love it. We haven’t put it in the box in over a week though. In fact, my son just put his sweaty gym sneakers on it now.

What I love:
The ease of use
How it can be totally dismanted
The Ozone smell you get when you turn it on. Just turn the switch and disinfect those sneakers.
It is safe! It the temperate reaches 105 it turns itself off
That you can use it to dry shoes, sneakers or boots

The Five-Step Progression for Helping Your Toddler Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Although losing precious hours of sleep at the hands of a toddler is to be expected, sleep deprivation in and of itself is no laughing matter.

From irritability and the inability to focus to suppressing your immune system for the long-term, the ill effects of not getting enough sleep can quickly run you ragged. When your kid can’t sleep, nobody wins.

While every mother should expect their toddlers having difficulty getting to bed, sleepless nights should be an exception to the rule rather than an expectation.

So, what can you do in the event that your toddler just can’t seem get any decent shut-eye? There’s a smart five-step progression that moms can follow to help get to the root of the problem without doing anything drastic.

Rather than try to make tons of changes at once, consider the following step-by-step process to making sure your child sleeps soundly.

1. Start with the Bedroom
Many parents overlook the importance of a proper environment for sleep. Creating optimal conditions for shut-eye can be done through a combination of the the following:

·         Installing blinds to block out excessive light, especially considering that the darker a room is, the better it is for sleep quality
·         Controlling the humidity within a room with a humidifier or dehumidifier, respectively
·         Keeping the room relatively cool with the help of ceiling or bedside fans

In short, rooms that are dark, cool and comfortable will make for a good night’s sleep.

2. Set Boundaries
Another often-overlooked aspect of better sleep for your child is discipline and being firm when it comes to getting them into bed

For example, does your toddler have an established bedtime? Do you encourage them to go to sleep on their own, or do you immediately cave when they ask to sleep in your bed?

Listen: setting limits for children isn’t always fun, but it’s absolutely necessary. A little bit of tough love can go a long way if you suspect your child is testing you regarding bedtime.

3. Establish a Nighttime Routine
On a related note, easing kids into a specific nighttime routine can help calm them down both mentally and physically, reminding them that it’s essentially time to rest. Reading to your child prior to bed is a great way to spend some productive quality time with your child while also helping them not off.

On the flip side, avoiding excessive playtime or screen-time (think: television or the iPad) is equally beneficial. Going back to the previous tip, you need to be firm about what is and isn’t acceptable before bed.

4. Rethink Their Daily Habits
What your child does during the day can ultimately have an impact on how they sleep. In addition to having routines for bedtime, think about their diets and activity levels on a day-to-day basis.

For example, eating excessive sugar or having an “anything goes” diet isn’t going to help your child during bedtime. Also, not getting enough physical activity during the day could result in restlessness that carries over to nighttime. The more of a traditionally healthy lifestyle you encourage on behalf of your toddler, the better.

5. Consult a Doctor
Finally, don’t rule out a visit to the doctor. After all, medical sleep disorders in children and sometimes the advice of a professional is what you need. While this is obviously the last option you should exhaust, it may be necessary for the well-being of your child.

You never know what just might be setting off your toddlers’ sleep woes until you examine each aspect of the big picture of their environment, habits and health. Whether you’re dealing with a simple case of discomfort of something more serious, this five-step approach can help you and your child sleep easy sooner rather than later.

Take My Nose Please Available On Digital and On Demand Today January 9th

AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY “TAKE MY NOSE… PLEASE!” HITS ON DEMAND VIA THE ORCHARD

The 411:

This movie is the perfect companion to the Me Too Movement going on in Hollywood right now. Woman in the film industry have been told for many, many years that if they were pretty enough they could have a career then they go and do what they were told to do, further objectifying THEMSELVES. But it is the double standard of woman and men in Hollywood that is truly sad. The fact that woman and not just woman of comedy who are smart, witty and even pretty unfortunately this is not enough "beauty is still what people want."

The movie follows two comedians Emily Askin and Jackie Hoffman who discuss changing their nose with plastic surgeons to be more marketable and prettier.

I loved the segment with "the most beautiful girl in the world" Phyllis Diller who talks about taking that part of her that "felt ugly" would say so before "they" could. She included the feelings about herself into her act. "They can't tell me I am ugly, I have already told them I am ugly." I found her so funny as a kid. She was pretty, funny and always seemed to be having fun.

It all comes back to that age old double standard that woman get older while men get distinguished. It doesn't have to be that way and this film shows the insecurities of woman as they deal with the mind set of the men's world. I think they have forgotten that it IS NO LONGER A MAN'S WORLD and it is a mind set.  The fact that woman have suffered tragically to change their looks is sad. They could lose life and limb to look prettier is sad! Every surgery is dangerous but like a smoker, they don't care. They must change their looks to be a better version of themselves.

The film makers definitely hit upon insecurities with body shame due to childhood trauma and how this plays into adult insecurities but for me this movie made me very sad.

Cameos by Michael Jackson, Lisa Lampanelli, Kathy Griffin, and many more add to the wonderful documentary that should really have us scratching our heads wondering I thought beauty was in the eye of the beholder?

Day 6 and 7 Photo Challenge - Playing Catch Up - Bunnies and Luna

Working at an animal shelter means we fall in love with new furries every time we go. We all have our favorites and if I couldn't there are probably 5 cats I would adopt right now. Yesterday we were able to hold some new bunnies only a few weeks old. They werre born in December. Mom came in with 6-8 baby bunnies and one day the volunteers of the day came in to clean up and found a bunch of pinkies newly born to mamma over night. Mom is white and dad is dark brown. They made some beautiful babies. Her first litter was all white while this new litter had some white, some grey, some dark brown almost black. They are adorable and very sweet. My daughter and I loved the opportunity to spend some time socializing them so they are ready for their forever home.

Not sure what Luna has her sights on out there but they should be very thankful she cannot get them.

Day 5 - Frozen - Photo Challenge

I challenged myself to take at least a photo a day. Photography was what originally brought me to the blog world and with life being so crazy I have put it on the back shelf. I plan on taking more photos this year and sharing it with you. If you plan on playing along with your own challenge please leave a link to your photo so I can find it.

OK...now about my photos of the day. This week I posted photos from my ride to and from work and how beautiful it is. Today after a snow day and a school delay the road was still beautiful but scary a few times as my truck fishtailed everywhere at 15-25 miles an hour.

These pics were taken from inside the truck with snow whipping around me like little mini tornadoes that started in the field and traveled across the road. It was 5 degrees out and as much as I wanted to get out and take some pics the wind made it feel like -12.

Day 4 - Photo Challenge - What Do You Do On Snow Days AND Snow Days Are A Gift

Handsome and Luna watching a cat video

I don't know about others but I love snow days. Thankfully I am very fortunate to work in a place where my boss understands I am a mom first. My kids are my utmost priority so when they are home, I am home and being with them is my favorite place to be.

This morning my husband headed in to work sooooo early. The alarm went off at 1:45 am. He shut it and I stayed awake so that I could wake him no later than 2:05 but then couldn't go back to sleep. He left at 3:45 and I tried for over an hour to sleep. It was definitely going to be a snow day so I shut the kids doors so the phone wouldn't wake them and waited.

They were both up before 8:30 and excited! After breakfast we watched a movie, spent time with the cat, headed outside to shovel so my husband could get in, played a game or two, baked cookies and just enjoyed being around each other. My days of them wanting to be with me are coming to a close as they are getting older. Their friends will eventually take much of their down time but until then, I will make the most of our days together and even when they are driving me crazy, remind myself that I will miss these fights, arguments and loud voices in the too soon coming years.

Note to my readers: Enjoy your kids! They are kids for only a short time and you will never get this time with them back!

Day 3 - Photo Challenge - Cat Lovers

We love our cat and she has a love/hate relationship with us. We got her November 1st from an animal shelter we volunteer at and she still acts like she has no idea who we are at times. We love having her here, think she is totally hystical, the whole house is in love with her are trying to be patient but we really want her to love us too.

Taking photos of her has become one of our favorite things to do. Here are a few of the ones we took today.

I adore these photos I took of my daughter, taking photos of our Luna
